El Escondido: a hidden treasure, and an unexpected paradise. This utopian spa built atop natural hot springs is a resting place on our journey through San Miguel de Allende, but it is also its own adventure.
SERENITY WITHIN A NATURAL HOT SPRING
Our experience unfolds not in the real world, but through an inner labyrinth. At its center lies complete serenity.
Our experience unfolds not in the real world, but through an inner labyrinth. At its center lies complete serenity. El Escondido is San Miguel’s best-kept secret, the gateway to its peaceful soul.
As we enter El Escondido, we’re guided through dense greenery and curtains of steam. On the other side, a natural pool is dotted with slowly drifting figures. We discover a torrential rain shower that pours from the center of a cave-like room. To one side, an arch opens to a natural lake, cool and still under the shade of wind-tousled trees. To the other, a staircase leads directly into gently swirling water. We rinse off and descend the staircase, a dream landscape unfolding before our eyes.
Stretching around is an oval-shaped chamber. The water is an enchanting turquoise, a color you can’t quite imagine until you’ve seen it. The walls are made of brick, contrasting with the azure waters.
In the middle is an archway built into the chamber’s structure. It’s made of colorful glass, casting shimmering reflections through the water and across the surrounding walls. We laugh in disbelief, and it resonates through the chamber.
We linger here for a while, and then descend additional stairs into another chamber. This one cradles a majestic fountain that seems to invite us into its stream. In the therapeutic waters, our tired muscles loosen and relax.
Later, we venture back to the lake and watch birds drift across its surface before diving in. This place is so relaxing it seems as if time has slowed. Have we been here for a quarter hour or a quarter century? After a delicious picnic beneath a gazebo, we nap in the dappled afternoon sunlight. It has been a day well spent.
